The Parts of a Butterfly

Wing areas. Some descriptive terms for parts of the wing. In addition the individual veins and spaces are given code numbers, e.g. s1, v2 etc.

The regions to the left however should be enough for a reasonable description of the markings of a particular species.

Wing scales. A butterflies wings are made up of thousands of tiny scales which refract the light creating  beautiful colours and patterns.

Pictured is a Swallowtail species, Papilio cresphontes.

Papilio cresphontes again. This time a view of an eye, proboscis and antenna. Head.
