Marbled fritillary - Brenthis daphne

Marbled fritillary upperside

Family: Nymphalidae.

Flight Time: May - August.

Size: 30-44mm

Altitude: 75-1750m

Underside The marbled effect on the underside gives this species its name. The similar Lesser marbled fritillary Brenthis ino is distinguished by an additional yellow shaded cell on the underside hindwing.

I noticed this particular specimen as different to the other species flying by the fact that a female was laying eggs on Bramble, rubus species, where as a large number of fritillaries use viola or violet species.
