'Moroccan' marbled white - Melanargia lucasi

lucas.jpg (37434 bytes)

Family: Nymphalidae.

Flight Time: May - September.

Habitat: Various.

Notes:

Really quite distinct in markings from the usual forms of the Marbled white, this is the subspecies lucasi which occurs in the High Atlas in Morocco, Bozano et al. 2002 describe lucasi as a separate species.. The heart-shaped mark seemed to be a consistent characteristic, surrounded as it is by a solid black bar.
