Woodland grayling - Hipparchia fagi

Provence specimen

Family: Satyridae.

Flight Time: June-September.

Size: 66-76mm

Altitude: 50-1800m

Pyrenean specimen These were reasonably plentiful in the forests near Axat, in the Pyrenées Orientales. Very difficult (if not impossible) to discriminate between this species and a close ally the Rock grayling (H. alcyone). I went on habitat and altitude as well as some small physical characters.
