| A number of mammals have an effect on lepidoptera
populations. Bats take a large amount of moths, but not many butterflies
due to their nocturnal habits. Ground mammals eat pupae and larvae, for
example voles and mice.
Birds have the biggest impact however. Numerous bird species eat caterpillars of all types. The adult butterfly is far from immune from their attentions also, seeing a butterfly with a peck taken from its wing is quite common. |
